Iowa DOT Cautions Travelers About Work Zones over July 4 Holiday
Posted 1 July 2010
Travel during the upcoming July 4 holiday may be slowed by road construction, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). Several projects on Iowa’s interstate and state roadways may warrant advance planning on the part of drivers.

Central Iowa
  • Due to pavement reconstruction of northbound Interstate 35 between Iowa 175 and U.S. 20, traffic is being routed in a head-to-head pattern in the southbound lanes.
  • The Iowa 17 bridge over the Des Moines River south of Madrid is being reconstructed. The road is closed and traffic is detoured onto Iowa 210 west through Woodward to Iowa 141.
  • The U.S. 30 Des Moines River bridge west of Boone is being repaired. Traffic is reduced to a single lane in each direction.
  • The U.S. 30 Raccoon River bridge west of Jefferson is being reconstructed. Traffic over the bridge is reduced to a single lane controlled by temporary traffic signals.
  • Due to roadway and bridge reconstruction, traffic on southbound U.S. 169 in Webster County on the west side of Fort Dodge is in a head-to-head pattern from Iowa 926 to north of Iowa 7.
North central/Northeast Iowa
  • Reconstruction of the eastbound lanes of Iowa 122 in Mason City has caused traffic to be shifted in a head-to-head pattern in the westbound lanes from Winnebago Way east 0.4-mile to Pierce Avenue. Left turns are not allowed between Winnebago Way and Pierce Avenue.
  • Work at the intersection of U.S. 18/Iowa 27 (Avenue of the Saints) and Floyd County Road T-24 has resulted in the closure of one eastbound and westbound lane on the Avenue of Saints near Floyd County Road T-24. Floyd County Road T-24 is closed and traffic is being detoured.
  • Traffic has been shifted in a head-to-head pattern on U.S. 63 near the intersection with Iowa 3 due to intersection reconstruction.
Northwest Iowa
  • U.S. 18 is closed southeast of Spencer for bridge replacement. Traffic is detoured.
  • U.S. 59 east of Ida Grove is closed for bridge deck replacement. Traffic is detoured.
  • Iowa 3 near Buena Vista County Road M-31 (approximately 13 miles east of Cherokee) is closed for bridge replacement. Traffic is detoured.
  • Iowa 15, five miles north of Rolfe, is closed for bridge deck replacement. Traffic is detoured.
  • Bridge reconstruction on eastbound traffic U.S. 20 has created a head-to-head traffic pattern approximately four miles west of Lawton.
  • Pavement reconstruction on I-29 near the Little Sioux interchange (exit 95) has created a head-to-head traffic pattern in the northbound lanes between mileposts 94.5 and 100.5.
  • Pavement reconstruction on I-29 near the Blencoe interchange (exit 105) has created a head-to-head traffic pattern in the southbound lanes between mileposts 101.5 and 107.1.
  • Pavement reconstruction of I-29 in Sioux City near the Iowa 12 (Riverside Boulevard) interchange has traffic down to two lanes in each direction for the two miles adjacent to the South Dakota border.
  • Pavement reconstruction of northbound I-29 from Whiting to the Woodbury County line has created a head-to-head traffic pattern in the southbound lanes between mileposts 119 and 127.
Southwest Iowa
  • Widening of two bridges on I-29 over the Boyer River in Harrison County near the Loveland interchange (exit 72) has reduced traffic to a single, 14-foot-6-inch wide lane in both the north- and southbound lanes.
  • The U.S. 6 Broadway viaduct bridge in Council Bluffs is being replaced in stages. Currently, westbound traffic is being detoured north on Eighth Street to Avenue G, west on Avenue G to 16th Street, and south on 16th Street back to Broadway. Eastbound traffic will continue to use a portion of the existing bridge as half of the new bridge is being built.
  • Construction of four bridges in the southbound lanes of I-29 in Mills County near Glenwood between mileposts 31 and 39 has traffic shifted in a head-to-head pattern in the northbound lanes.
  • Bridge construction and asphalt resurfacing has closed southbound I-29 in Fremont County between mileposts 21 and 25. Traffic is shifted in a head-to-head pattern in the northbound lanes.
  • A bridge deck overlay project in Pottawattamie County just south of Council Bluffs has restricted I-29 to one lane in each direction at milepost 47.
  • A bridge deck overlay project in the city of Adair has restricted the Adair County Road N-54 bridge over I-80 to one 11-foot-6-inch width lane. Traffic is controlled with temporary signals.
  • A new bridge deck is being placed on the westbound I-680 bridge at milepost 17. One lane is closed at this location.
  • A new bridge deck is being placed on the Modale interchange bridge over I-29 at milepost 82 in Harrison County. The interchange is closed, and motorists traveling to Modale should follow the marked detour.
  • A new bridge deck is being placed on the Dexter/Redfield interchange bridge over I-80 at milepost 100 in Dallas County. The interchange is closed and motorists traveling to Dexter and Redfield should follow the marked detour.
  • Iowa 92 between Massena and Bridgewater is closed to replace two bridges. Traffic should follow the marked detour.
South central Iowa
  • Northbound I-35 from the Decatur County line to U.S. 34 is closed for reconstruction. Traffic is routed in a head-to-head pattern in the southbound lanes.
  • Westbound U.S. 34 traffic in the city limits of Osceola will remain in a head-to-head pattern in the eastbound lanes as the bridge over I-35 is reconstructed.
  • U.S. 34 in Chariton will remain closed for replacement of the bridge deck over the Cinder Path Trail. Traffic is being detoured.
Eastern Iowa
  • Pavement reconstruction on I-80 at Iowa City between mileposts 244 and 248 involves temporary narrow shoulder widths and installation of concrete median barrier rails. Two lanes of travel remain available in each direction.
  • The I-80 Cedar River bridge replacement has caused a traffic shift in the area, but two lanes of travel remain available in each direction.
  • Due to the ongoing I-80 Mississippi River bridge repair project by the Illinois DOT, traffic is restricted to one lane in each direction on the south half of the bridge. The contractor is working on the north half of the structure performing repairs. During this stage of construction, the ramp from Illinois 84 to westbound I-80 at Rapids City, Ill., will be closed. Traffic from Illinois 84 going to Iowa will be detoured on eastbound I-80 to I-88, and then west to Iowa. All other ramps at the Illinois 84 interchange and all ramps at the U.S. 67 interchange at Le Claire will be open. Through traffic is advised to use I-280 as an alternate route.
  • Iowa 64/Iowa 136 in the city of Wyoming is closed for reconstruction. Traffic has been detoured to Jones County roads X-75 and E-45.
  • The westbound Iowa 1 (Burlington Street) bridge over the Iowa River in Iowa City is being repaired. The south half of the bridge is closed. Two lanes remain open to traffic.
  • Pavement reconstruction has resulted in lane closures at the intersection of Iowa 100 (Collins Road) and Business U.S. 151 (First Avenue) in Cedar Rapids.
There are many other ongoing construction and maintenance projects affecting traffic on state, county and local road systems. Details of all current Iowa DOT construction projects can be found at http://www.511ia.org/.

Tips for driving safely in work zones
  • Expect the unexpected. Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people may be working on or near the road.
  • Slow down and do not tailgate. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead. The most common crash in a highway work zone is the rear-end collision.
  • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and road workers and their equipment.
  • Pay attention to the signs. Warning signs are there to help you and other drivers move safely through the work zone. Observe the posted signs until you see the one that reads "End Road Work."
  • Obey flaggers. The flagger knows what is best for moving traffic safely in the work zone. A flagger has the same authority as a regulatory sign, so you can be cited for disobeying his or her directions.
  • Stay alert and minimize distractions. Dedicate your full attention to the roadway and avoid changing radio stations, using cell phones, texting or other distractions while driving in a work zone.  Texting while driving is illegal in Iowa beginning July 1.
  • Keep up with the traffic flow. Motorists can help maintain traffic flow and posted speeds by merging as soon as possible. Do not drive right up to the lane closure and then try to merge.
  • Be patient and stay calm. Work zones are not there to inconvenience travelers. Remember, road workers are improving the road for your use.
  • Watch for persons wearing high visibility (HiViz) apparel. All persons, including the media, are required by federal law to wear HiViz apparel when in highway work zones.
  • Prepare for your trip to take a little more time. Check radio, TV or Web sites (http://www.511ia.org/) or call 511 for traffic information. Expect delays and leave early so you can reach your destination on time.
  • Be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones.
Buckle up. Effective July 1, all persons under age 18 must be buckled up, regardless of vehicle seating position. All persons must be buckled up in the front seat.
