Small Horses, Big Event at Kirkwood
Posted 21 June 2010
This is a big show centered on fascinatingly small horses.

Breeders and enthusiasts of the smaller kinds of equines are coming to Cedar Rapids. The All American Miniature Horse show is held at the Iowa Equestrian Center Saturday and Sunday, June 19-20. Doors open and events begin at 8:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday

There are 170 horses coming to show in this American Miniature Horse Registry Show. The show consists of 150 classes and is one of the largest miniature horse-only shows in the U.S. this year. Horses are coming to this show to qualify for the National show, set for September in Tulsa, Okla. Exhibitors are coming from Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Missouri. There also is a horse owner from Arizona that will have his horses shown here this weekend.

The show will cover two types of miniatures: type A) are horses that are 34 inches and under at the shoulder; and Type B) are 34 – 38 inches.

Attendees will see a wide variety of classes of miniature horse competitions. Halter classes will be held in the mornings. The afternoon and evening classes will be driving classes, versatility classes and obstacle classes. There also will be a mare foal race. This class is a fun raffle in which the mare and her baby foal will be brought into the arena together. The mare will be taken to opposite end of the arena. The baby will be let loose and the first baby to reach its mother and nurse will be the winner.
