Iowans Now Eligible For Jobs Program
Posted 18 July 2008
Governor Chet
Culver announced that additional Iowans are eligible to work in the
Emergency Public Jobs program funded by the $17.1 million National
Emergency Grant (NEG).
“Communities large and small saw many public areas damaged or
destroyed,” said Governor Culver. “Our state must do all it can
to help those affected recover, and that is why the National Emergency
Public Jobs Program is so important. With these federal dollars,
we are able to help towns and cities restore their public areas while
putting Iowans back to work. I am proud to announce that more
Iowans are now eligible for this program, and encourage Iowans in
impacted areas who are currently seeking employment to apply.
With their help, and the help of all Iowans, we can rebuild this state
better, stronger, and safer than before.”
The Governor previously requested the NEG to hire Iowans displaced by
the flooding to provide clean-up and recovery efforts for Iowa’s public
facilities and infrastructure. The project is now accepting
applications from individuals living in counties declared eligible for
individual assistance by FEMA who have been unemployed for 15 of the
last 26 weeks. Additionally, individuals participating in the
federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program will be
eligible to work on the Emergency Public Jobs program without
jeopardizing their additional benefits.
“By allowing Iowans whose employment situation has been adversely
affected for a significant period of time to participate in the
program, the grant is able to assist the greatest number of
individuals,” stated Iowa Workforce Development Director, Elisabeth
Buck.
The grant projects contain employment opportunities for over 800
Iowans. 117 projects have been identified across the state and
additional projects are still expected.
Individuals can work for approximately six months in the program and
can earn up to $12,000. Individuals are paid at the prevailing rate for
the worksite, which provides higher compensation than unemployment
insurance benefits. To apply, Iowans who are eligible are encouraged to
contact their local Iowa Workforce Development Office.
