Author, Photographer to Speak at Writer's Retreat
Posted 14 July 2008
The Journey of Writing” is the theme for the Northeast Iowa Writers
Retreat this summer. It will be held Saturday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. until
4 p.m. in Dubuque at the historic Bricktown Brewery.
Speakers will include Denny Eilers, freelance writer and photographer.
Eilers lives in Luana, where he runs his business, Iowa Photo Farm. He
spent 20 years as an advertising writer, before becoming a freelancer
in 1990. He’s written for both magazines and newspapers, and has done
work-for-hire for such companies as American Express and John Deere.
He’s also an award-winning photographer. Eilers will be talking to
writers about the importance of the query letter, and how to write a
query that will grab the attention of an editor or agent.
Speaker Sandra Principe from Galena, Ill. will be talking about her
writing and publishing journey. Principe’s written three mystery
novels, Murder in Galena, Murder on the Mississippi, and Murder at
Galena Stables. She retired from a 20-year law practice in Chicago in
1996 in order to write and paint. She established Galena Publishing in
2004. She handles all aspects of producing her books (writing, editing,
layout, cover design, printing, advertising and distribution), and
works with other authors to publish their books as well.
Resident speaker and internationally-known mystery writer, Donald
Harstad of Elkader, will be discussing the submission process, and how
to professionally deal with an agent and publishing companies.
Harstad’s the author of Eleven Days, Known Dead, The Big Thaw, Code 61,
and A Long December. He crafts masterful stories, and holds a wealth of
information on the publishing business.
Lunch is included in the $45 registration fee. For more information,
