County
Estimates Flood Damage at $45 Million
Posted 4 July 2008
Linn County buildings, equipment and roads sustained an estimated $45
million in damage from recent flooding, nearly half the county's annual
budget, according to county officials.
Cleaning, repair and rebuilding schedules are beginning to emerge but
will take months, or even longer, to return offices and services to
normal.
The county hopes to have portions of the Linn County Courthouse on
May's Island up and running in about two months. Authorities say the
jail and courthouse are a priority for the county.
Many of the county's prisioners are currently being housed at the
Anamosa State Peniteniary. Court operations have been moved to a
building at Kirkwood Community College.
Other county offices and services have been scattered to available
locations throughout the city of Cedar Rapids.
