State Volunteer Leaders Challenge Iowans to Serve on MLK Holiday
Posted 16 January, 2012
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?" ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Since Martin Luther King Jr. first issued that call to service,
Americans have sought ways to build upon our country's long history of
service to others - the spirit which Dr. King exemplified. In
1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the law which made the third
Monday in January a national holiday to honor King's birthday.
Three years later, that same day was designated as a national day of
service by Congress. The idea is simple: Make it a day ON, not a
day off.
Together, the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service (ICVS) and the
Corporation for National and Community Service's (CNCS) Iowa Office,
are encouraging organizations to host projects to honor the legacy of
Dr. King and to bring attention to-and help meet-the real needs
affecting so many Iowans.
"Dr. King's teachings continue to guide us in addressing our most
pressing social needs", said Patti Fields, Chair of the Iowa Commission
on Volunteer Service. "Each of us can help strengthen our own
communities by serving in Dr. King's honor on MLK Day and throughout
the year."
"We are reaching out to all Iowans and asking you to help your fellow
neighbors, and those in need by participating in one of the biggest
national Days of Service," said Vicki Hover-Williamson, Executive
Director of the Corporation for National and Community Service Iowa
Office.
Iowa volunteers will be a part of the hundreds of thousands of
Americans participating in MLK Day events and service projects in all
50 states. Projects in Iowa will range from food, book, and
product drives, to creating greeting cards and assembling care
packages, to a service lab, completing basic household tasks and
painting projects. The possibilities, as well as opportunities to
help out, are endless. Find a way to get involved by clicking on the
MLK icon at www.volunteeriowa.org.
